SSA’s 2011 Annual Meeting will provide a stimulating exchange of research on a wide range of topics with colleagues from all over the world. Oral presentations, poster sessions, exhibits, field trips, business meetings and social gatherings all provide participants the opportunity to meet and share with their peers. The meeting will also commemorate the bicentennial of the the great 1811 and 1812 New Madrid earthquakes that forever changed the mid-western US landscape. In 2011 and 2012, there will be events held throughout the central United States observing the anniversary. The January/February 2010 Earthquakes in Haiti, Offshore Northern California, and Chile: Origins, Impacts and Lessons Learned

On January 10 2010, a magnitude 6.5 earthquake ruptured a fault within the Gorda plate off the coast of Northern California, ending 15 years of relative seismic quiescence on California's North Coast and causing over $40 million in losses in Humboldt County. Three days later, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake occurred near Port-au-Prince, Haiti in an event that is likely to be listed as one of the great earthquake catastrophes of all time. We welcome papers addressing the mechanisms and tectonic settings of these earthquakes, the geotechnical factors, strong motion, remote sensing aspects, and direct observations of the earthquake zones including associated deformation, tsunami, landsliding and other evidence, as well as impacts and implications for regional seismic hazards. Addendum- This session will also include papers addressing these aspects of the Chile earthuake.

From the SSA web page. It's too late to submit an abstract, but not too late to plan on going. You could go on the San Andreas–Loma Prieta field trip! The technical program is online, including 476 abstracts, including 8 from our colleagues at Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory. And I'm not sure if it qualifies as eastern, but there are 11 abstracts for a session on the M5.4 Mt. Carmel, Illinois, Earthquake, 18 April 2008 (Illinois quake info.)

Field Trips

Two field trips will be offered on Saturday, April 11, following the conference.

Registration

You may register for the meeting online. Registrations received prior to March 6, 2009 receive a 15% discount. Online registrations will be accepted through March 27. We do accept walk-in registrations as space allows.
