I made a presentation about geophysics and the Japan earthquake to 7th graders at a local middle school last week. One student asked if I thought the world would end in 2012. My answer, not surprisingly, was no. Read NASA's response to that popular belief.
There have also been stories about the end of the world beginning with the rapture on May 21. That's in 3 days! This is supposed to be accompanied by huge earthquakes. One website states "On Saturday May 21st, the world will experience what Harold Camping has predicted a Global Earthquake to be the Greatest Earthquake ever. Camping’s Prophecy Predictions have been proven incorrect in the past, but he has learned from the mistake he made in 1994, and is confident about the date of May 21 2011. If the earth starts to shake on May 21 Doomsday, how will you react?"
Why would anyone believe this? I'd like to say the spiritual diversity of people is one of the things that makes our species beautiful, but I'm not sure I can.

Bill Maher has made fun of my relgion for the last time. I am so through with that guy.
ReplyDeleteHA! People have been predicting the end of the world since the dawn of man. If and when the world ends it will be at our own hands. Each time I hear about another nut job saying the world is going to end, I just shake my head and sigh.

Bill Maher has his opinion, as you have yours.. he has as you would call it the "God given right." to say whatever he wants about whoever he wants, whenever he wants, wherever he wants. Also this whole May 21st bible prophecy.. although creepy in it's dates coinciding this way.. if it's wrong will you discount your religion all together? Because this pretty much discounts any truth in it at all or shows just how little we really know about existence, creation, time-space.. anything we claim to know anything about really. So calm down, go with the flow.. whatever happens happens. ReplyDeleteI think what the first Anonymous is trying to get across is that sometimes even in humor, you can cross the line. Mahr is simply mean spirited and very angry and condescending towards any views not his own, Christian or otherwise. I would suggest in turn that maybe Mahr needs to chill out. :)
ReplyDeleteAs well, practically EVERY Christian out there does not believe anything will happen May 21st. Even the concept of a rapture is not universally accepted. If the Christian community seems uptight, it might just be because we're trying to put a cap in this nonsense before everyone ( like Mahr ) thinks we're all in the same boat. To put it mildly, we have a bit of a misinformation campaign to fight against!
If I may quote the group, it will NOT happen "the Bible guarantees it". This is a just a rouge band of crazies that will have to deal with their false prophet leader, Harold Camping, the day after.
hahaahahahahaha religion is a waste of time do what you want whenever you want and stop letting some dude in a white robe with luscious hair i might add, control your every decision.
ReplyDelete@ Josh and Anon: Bill Maher did not make fun of Christianity. He may be making fun of Christians, which is legitimate in this case. He has not attacked Jesus or the bible. Any numerical prediction associated with the bible is silly. The data just is not there. No honest reading would lead anybody to believe that there is a specific date predicted in scripture. Jesus said that people would talk about the coming of the end of the world, and that people should not listen to them. It is all crazy!
